At least 62 arrests after attacks on Israeli football fans in Amsterdam
US authorities bring charges against an Iranian man over an alleged plot to assassinate Donald Trump

Five people have been injured and 62 arrested after clashes between pro-Palestinian protesters and Israeli soccer fans in Amsterdam.
The clashes broke out after a match between Ajax and the Israeli team Maccabi Tel Aviv.
Dutch authorities say young people on scooters attacked the Israeli fans in hit-and-run assaults that were apparently fuelled by calls spread on social media to target Jewish people.
Prior to the match, Israeli supporters were seen demonstrating with flares outside, tearing down Palestinian flags and shouting anti-Arab slogans.
Five people were treated in hospital and around 30 others suffered minor injuries.
The head of the Israeli football team Maccabi Tel Aviv, Ben Mansford, says the side’s fans were attacked because they are Jewish.
“I think football fans across the across Europe and across the world have been, have been shocked by what we experienced last night. We feel a great sense of solidarity with football clubs and I think to all of them that have reached out to us as a club and to all of them that have supported us in the last few hours, thank you very much.”

The United Nations is warning famine is imminent in the northern Gaza Strip.
The alert has been issued by the UN’s Integrated Food Security Phase Classification.
The UN’s Stephanie Tremblay says the alert further underscores the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is “extremely grave and rapidly deteriorating.”
“According to the alert issued by the IPC’s Famine Review Committee, there’s a strong likelihood that famine is imminent in areas within the northern Gaza Strip. The alert further underscores that the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, as we have just detailed, is extremely grave and rapidly deteriorating.”

Authorities in the United States have charged an Iranian man over a plot to kill Donald Trump.
They allege that 51-year-old Farhad Shakeri, who is based in Iran, had been tasked by Iran’s military to kill multiple people, including the president-elect.
The Department of Justice says two other men have been arrested in New York over a plot to kill an American citizen with Iranian heritage who is an outspoken critic of Iran.

Police in Brazil say gunmen have killed a man who had agreed to speak to prosecutors about his ties to a criminal organisation.
The unidentified gunmen have opened fire at Sao Paulo’s international airport, killing the man and injuring three others.
The victim, identified as Antonio Vinicius Lopes Gritzbach, had received death threats from the international criminal group known as the First Command of the Capital.
Gritzbach, who had cryptocurrency businesses, had recently entered into a plea bargain with local prosecutors to speak about his ties to the criminal organisation.

A man is set to face court charged with murdering a 70-year-old woman on the NSW mid-north coast.
Police found the woman’s body at a unit in South West Rocks, about 30km north of Kempsey.
Officers arrested a 59-year-old man at the scene and say he was known to the victim.
He was refused bail and is due to appear before the Port Macquarie Bail Court.

Authorities in Greece have arrested two men suspected of being part of a transnational crime ring exporting crystal meth and MDMA to Australia.
Police seized about 56 kg of the psychedelic drug MDMA, the main ingredient of ecstasy pills, and nearly 30 kg of methamphetamine, also known by its street name of ice or crystal meth.
They were hidden in boxes, among olive oil and olive containers in a warehouse in the capital Athens.
Following a tip-off, officers from Greece’s drug law enforcement unit monitored the two men as they transferred the boxes to another Athens warehouse in an operation that led to their arrest.

In horse racing, Via Sistina is the favourite to win this afternoon’s Champions Stakes at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne.
The horse won this year’s Cox Plate at Moonee Valley by eight-lengths.
Jockey James McDonald says today’s race will be a test.
“We’re under no illusions it’s going to be a tough ask for her but she seems very, very well and like I said before, she thrives on work and she really enjoys it so she hasn’t taken a backward step.”
